Product Overview

Many hospital rooms require special design considerations because of intensified infection concerns, high air change rates, special equipment, unique procedures, high internal loads, and immunocompromised patients. However, in no other healthcare space does the HVAC system design take on more importance than in an operating room (OR), whose purpose is to minimize infection, maintain staff comfort, and contribute to an environment of patient care.

Environmental monitoring involves tracking and controlling various ecological parameters, such as air cleanliness, temperature, humidity, and more. This ensures that the hospital environment remains safe and optimal.

Maintaining appropriate temperatures is vital for patient comfort, medication storage, and equipment functionality. Proper humidity levels prevent harmful microorganisms' growth and ensure medical supplies' longevity. Clean air reduces the risk of airborne infections and improves overall patient outcomes. Regular surface cleaning prevents the spread of bacteria and viruses. Automated monitoring systems provide real-time data and alerts, ensuring immediate response to any deviations from set parameters.

The SONICU Environmental monitoring system continuously monitors and records all environmental conditions, such as temperature, airflow, humidity, air exchanges, traffic patterns, and door activity. Real-time monitoring will ensure comfort for the staff and patient and an optimum aseptic environment, safety, and infection control. Our hospital monitoring system sends automated reports and alerts to meet high standards for OR.

Importance of Environmental Monitoring Systems for Hospitals

  • Creating a safe hospital environment benefits patients, staff, and the entire healthcare system. By installing a well-calibrated environmental monitoring system, we can ensure the necessary monitoring is effectively regulated to maintain a high standard of safety in the hospital setting.
  • Proper airflow in the surgical suite promotes air quality and minimizes airborne contamination, helping reduce surgical site infections. An air exchange rate of 20 air changes per hour has been recommended.1
  • The OR should have a positive pressure gradient relative to all surrounding areas, including supply storage areas that are directly accessible to the OR. Pressure differentials prevent the backflow of air from contaminated areas within the suite or facility.1
  • The healthcare organization should create and implement a systematic process for monitoring HVAC system equipment and establish a mechanism for reporting and resolving unintentional variances. In addition, the frequency of filter changes and a mechanism for maintaining the system should be established.1
  • Regulatory bodies provide guidelines for OR environmental requirements. For example, ASHRAE Standard 170 is used for ventilation requirements for healthcare facilities. AORN guidelines are used for the design and maintenance of the surgical suite.2 A proper environmental monitoring system can automate reporting and reduce manual tasks for appropriate compliance with industry standards.
